Peacock Orders The Office Spinoff Set in the World of Local Newspapers
Classic sitcom The Office is getting a spinoff, with a new mockumentary series ordered by Peacock. Set in the same universe as the original show, this untitled series will focus on the trials and tribulations of a struggling Midwestern newspaper.
The new show is the brainchild of Greg Daniels, who adapted The Office for US audiences, and Michael Koman, co-creator of Nathan for You. It will be executive produced by Daniels and Koman, alongside original Office creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
The official synopsis from Peacock reveals: “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
The star-studded cast of the spinoff includes Domhnall Gleeson, known for his roles in About Time and Ex Machina, and Sabrina Impacciatore, who impressed audiences in The White Lotus. They will lead an ensemble cast, with further details yet to be announced.
Lisa Katz, President of Entertainment at NBCUniversal, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: “It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock. In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”
The original Office mockumentary series, which ran from 2005 to 2013, focused on the lives of employees at the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. It launched the careers of stars such as Mindy Kaling, John Krasinski, and Ellie Kemper, and its nine seasons are filled with memorable moments and hilarious antics.
The untitled spinoff series is scheduled to begin production in July 2024, with the release date yet to be announced.
