“JAY-Z and Gayle King: Brooklyn’s Own” A One-Hour Primetime Special from”CBS Mornings” on Nov 14
In a primetime special airing on Tuesday, November 14th, immediately following the series premiere of “NCIS: Sydney” on CBS, hip-hop artist JAY-Z will sit down with CBS MORNINGS co-host Gayle King to discuss his life, music, work in criminal justice, business acumen, and family. The special, titled “JAY-Z AND GAYLE KING: BROOKLYN’S OWN,” will feature never-before-seen footage from King’s three-hour interview with JAY-Z at the Brooklyn Public Library, where a new exhibit explores his life and legacy.
JAY-Z, also known as Shawn Corey Carter, is not just a musician but a mogul and visionary. With 24 Grammy Awards, a Peabody Award, and a significant influence on style and businesses worldwide, JAY-Z has made a name for himself as one of the biggest multihyphenate superstars and business executives of our time. He is also a major proponent of criminal justice reform and has investments worth millions of dollars.
During the interview, JAY-Z will discuss his upbringing in the Marcy Houses in Brooklyn and how music became his path out of difficult circumstances. He will open up about his business career, his creative process in making music, and the stories behind some of his famous lyrics. The special will also include footage from a 2002 interview on 60 MINUTES II, showcasing a younger JAY-Z on the verge of becoming the mogul he is today.
JAY-Z will reflect on his childhood, sharing stories about growing up in the Marcy Houses and the challenges he faced. He will discuss how those experiences shaped his early life and influenced his entry into the music industry. JAY-Z will also talk about the significance of the Marcy Houses and how it has transformed from his childhood home to a tourist attraction.
“I think what matters most is, today, is, being a beacon and helping out … my culture. People of color. I think I pull the most satisfaction from that. Like making music earlier was, like – my first love. I could sit there for hours. It consumed me. Just finding words and figuring out words and how to say this and different ways to say that and different pockets and melodies and how to write this song,” JAY-Z says. “That consumed me. That’s why my pace was so fast. I had so much material … And I think now, you know, the idea of, of taking that platform and, you know, reproducing it for others or doing something like Reform … I think I derive the most joy from that.”
JAY-Z AND GAYLE KING: BROOKLYN’S OWN is produced by CBS MORNINGS and See It Now Studios for CBS News. Gayle King and Shawna Thomas are the executive producers.
The special will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
